CLIMATE CHANGE – YOUTH ON CLIMATE ACTION

To address Climate Change in our communities in Uganda and Nakawa, Kampala District in particular, we work with locals and their leaders to REFUSE – REDUCE – REUSE – RECYCLE waste in Kampala, Kamuli suburbs that result into Flooding and unhealthy environments.

For example, in Nakawa Division which is one of the five administrative divisions of the city of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda. The division faced a challenge of Improper waste disposal.

“The garbage that is not properly disposed enters into drainage systems and clogs drains. This obstructs the free flow of the water that enters into these drains causing water to back up during rainfall flooding the surrounding area. A buildup of garbage can also obstruct the natural flow of water in rivers and streams”, and this was the same case with Nakawa. We thus teamed up with the office of the Mayor, mobilizing and engaging youths and al local people into Waste minimization, recycling, and reuse.

Together, every Saturday, we remove lots of trash from off the ground, but also sensitize and train the communities on how best we must refuse, reduce and recycle waste.

The local authorities team up with our team to facilitate these activities with tractors that picks and takes the already collected garbage by our team to a centralized dumping area that has been set aside by the government.

To avoid living in a stinking rotten environment, with foul water and air that affect the health of our people, we equally caution them about the effects of throwing garbage anywhere.
